UK AND IRELAND'S SECOND MOST POPULAR BED SIZE
Double beds have been dethroned by the increasingly popular King Size and are now the second most popular bed size in the UK, and are even preferred by some bed soloists.
Many couples still very happily snuggle in the double bed, because bigger isn't always better!
By choosing the classic double over a king size, you'll have more space in your bedroom as well as potentially getting more cuddles. What's not to love about that?

WHAT SIZE IS A DOUBLE BED?
Don't mistake your bed for a 'small double' or a 'euro double'...
This is specific to the UK and Ireland, so just a good old fashioned regular double here!

In feet: 4'6" x 6'3"
HOW HOW BIG IS A DOUBLE BED?
Some would argue it's great for a large single, and a little too small for a large couple...
A double bed is plenty big enough for your typical single sleeper. And yes, it does still have a place in the world for a couple if a little snuggly!
The 135cm width allows for 67.5cm per person, which is 22.5cm less than you would get with a standard UK single.
75cm is the width of regular pillowcases (75cm x 50cm), meaning that your pillows will fit well enough but certainly without any gaps.
Double beds are still the second most popular bed size in the UK, but the trend towards King Size is definitely gathering momentum as everyone is getting a little larger.
HOW WIDE IS A DOUBLE BED?
As per the above, a standard UK and Ireland double bed is 135cm wide (4 feet 6 inches).
Great for a solo sleeper or a snuggly couple.
HOW LONG IS A DOUBLE BED?
As per the above, a standard UK and Ireland super king size bed is 190cm long (6 feet 3 inches).
The 95% percentile height for a male in the UK is 6' 1", which would leave just 2".
You have to go up to the 98% percentile to breach the 6' 3" of a double bed, so if you're one of the 2% then maybe consider a super king size!
IS A DOUBLE BED RIGHT FOR ME?
Double beds sit in second position for popularity behind 'king size' for sales in the UK. Solo starfish, or a cuddly couple sleepers...
Only if you are taller than 6' 3" and are finding that a super king or an emperor size bed is too small, should you look for something bespoke. It'll be a lot more expensive to buy the bed itself, but also to dress in high quality bed sheets.
OTHER DOUBLE BED CONSIDERATIONS?
Not so fast though... Before replacing your single bed for a double bed, make sure that you have sufficient space in your bedroom.
A bed which is too big in a small room just doesn't look right and might spoil the flow and usability of your bedroom. Conversely, small beds in large rooms can sometimes feel lost and look out of place - so if you have a huge bedroom then maybe consider something even larger than a double bed.
Around 30-35% of your bedroom should be taken up by your bed. For a double bed, this would mean a bedroom size of around 3m x 4m which a wonderfully large bedroom.
A walking space of at least 70-80cm around your bed or to the nearest wall, window or bedroom furniture. A standard corridor width in the UK is 90cm, so make sure you have enough room to move around comfortably!
